Interesting to see: The Richard Dimbleby Lecture 2007: ‘A DNA Driven World’ by Dr. J. Craig Venter. Aired: December 4, 2007 on BBC 1

A transcript of his lecture can be found here. The century ahead will be fundamentally shaped by advances in biology, Venter says. His current aim: Design an organism capable of creating energy.

Edit:

Later, in February 2008, Craig did this talk ‘On the verge of creating synthetic life’ at TED:

Famed geneticist creating life form that turns CO2 to fuel

I didn’t watch the lecture yet, but what does “creating energy” mean?

Collecting and storing energy seems possible, but _creating_? And all creatures collect and store energy. Sometimes we can even use that energy (e.g. by burning wood or by letting a horse pull a cart).

Could you please elaborate a bit?
